“I as always enjoy talking about and teaching people about animal welfare, and especially environmental enrichment. The workshop was a great opportunity to do this in a manner I like best - working with a relatively small group - and with sufficient time to cover all of the important topics. All too often I am requested to speak to large groups, which while good in terms of spreading the important message that animal welfare and environmental enrichment are important, does not allow the lecturer time to develop these concepts in sufficient detail for the audience? Small groups like the one I taught in 2006 are ideal because I can tailor my course to the needs of the students - a situation which is much more satisfying for both the students and me. As always in any course the test of its usefulness is in what the students go away and do with the information. I have had a number of e-mails from the students in 2006 telling me of their work and this is the most gratifying thing of all - to know that you are making a difference.”

“I enjoy teaching my class around the world. There are so many excellent trainers in various parts of the world - teaching my class gives me a chance to meet both young and experienced trainers. While I enjoy teaching trainers, I learn a great deal from the experiences myself. In Antibes, France we had a large class representing trainers from at least a dozen countries with a background in training form many disciplines - dog trainers, horse trainer, marine mammal trainers, elephant trainers, and many more. The discussions were lively and it was such a great experience that I returned the following year to teach the course for a new group of trainers in St. Andrews, Scotland. I look forward to my next opportunity to teach in Europe.”
